Mrs. Lora Semones Davenport, 93, of Clemmons, passed away Saturday evening, June 8, 2013, after declining health and dementia. Mrs. Davenport was born December 31, 1919, in Carroll County, VA, one of seven children born to the late John Wilson and Minnie Inez Vass Semones. A former resident of the Westlake Drive community of Mount Airy, Lora had resided at Clemmons Village One in Clemmons for the last six years. Lora retired from Quality Mills and proudly worked part-time until the age of 79. Lora loved gospel music and was a member of a gospel quartet and a church pianist. One of her favorite pasttimes was to gather her family around her piano as she played old hymns and they sang. Lora was an avid gardener and roses and tomatoes were her specialty. She loved to host company and have them enjoy her fabulous country cooking and numerous delicious desserts. Mrs. Davenport was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Airy and a member of the Golden Circle Sunday School Class. Fondly known as "Nanny," she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Tony Goins of Lewisville; four grandchildren, John Edward Bryant of Orlando, FL, Lori (Dale) Clark of Lewisville, Claudia (James) Banner of Winston-Salem, and Yancey Martin Goins of Tucson, AZ; four great-grandchildren, Cameron Clark, Blake Banner, Barrett Banner, and Bradshaw Banner; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Semones of Hillsville, VA. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davenport was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Calvin Davenport; a daughter, Helen Louise Davenport Childers; five sisters, Hattie Branscomb, Norma Goad, Lola Sowers, Goldie Utt, and Sadie Bowman; and a brother, Burley Semones. A graveside celebration of Lora's life will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 11:30 AM at Rockford Baptist Church Cemetery in Rockford. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 314 South Franklin Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Community Home Care and Hospice, 225 Davie Avenue, Statesville, NC 28677.
