Mr. Loyd Hugh "L.H." Hawks, Jr., 79, of 1931 Pipers Gap Road, Mount Airy, passed away Friday, December 18, 2009, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Hawks was born April 9, 1930, in Yeager, WV, to the late Loyd Hugh Hawks, Sr. and Grace Leftwich Hawks. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in the Korean Conflict, and was retired from A.W. Trucking as a dispatcher. He was a member of Lambsburg Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Helen Grey Hawks of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Bill Hull of Mount Airy; two sons, Leonard Wade Hawks of Mount Airy and Loyd Hugh Hawks, III of Charlotte; two grandsons and a spouse, Will and Brea Hull and Adam Hull, all of Mount Airy; a great-grandson, Carter Hull of Mount Airy; two sisters, Opal Stewart of Clemmons and Lois Ann King of Mount Airy; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Charles and Kathleen Hawks and Darrell and Carol Hawks, all of Lambsburg, and Christine Hawks of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Eddie Gray of Roanoke, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawks was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Gray; a brother, Carroll Hawks; and two brothers-in-law, Roland Stewart and Newton King. The funeral service will be held Monday, December 21, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Verlon Combs officiating. Burial will follow in the Flower Gap Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 9:00 until 11:00 AM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lambsburg Baptist Church, P.O. Box 85, Lambsburg, VA 24351, or to the Charles D. Gillespie Animal Adoption Center, 172 Old County Home Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
