Mrs. Lucille Handy Layman, age 100 of Stuart, Virginia transitioned from Earth to join her Savior and Lord on Thursday, April 20, 2023. She was born on May 10, 1922, to the late John Franklin Handy and Rosa Bell Martin Handy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Raymond Layman; one sister, Nannie Dee Handy; and four brothers and three sisters-in-law, John Abe Handy and wife, Lonie, Fred Dudley Handy and wife, Vesta, Noel Jasper Handy and Velma, and Samuel Raymond Handy. Lucille was very content to be a stay-at-home wife and mother. As long as she could, she liked working in her flowers. She was an excellent cook and served many Sunday after church meals to her family. She and Raymond attended Providence United Methodist Church as long as they were physically able.
Left to cherish the memories of Mrs. Lucille Layman are her four children, Shelby Turner and husband, Junior, Mildred Layman, Dee Dee Parrish, and Kathy Tompkins; her beloved grandchildren Pam Stafford and husband Mark, Amy Parrish, Katrina Tompkins, Tyler Tompkins, Kenneth Hopkins, and Michael Hopkins and wife, Deborah; great-grandchildren, Amber Lilly and husband, Zack, Austin Hopkins, Taylor Hopkins, Sydney Hopkins, Ashley Roberson, Riley Roberson and wife, Christin, Abby Sharpe and Lizzy Sharpe; great-great-grandchildren Ava Mae Lilly, Jada Lilly, Camden Roberson and Magnolia Roberson; a very special friend, Denise Hopkins; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mrs. Layman will be held on Monday, April 24, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor David Coleman officiating. Burial will immediately follow in Patrick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Monday afternoon at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to The Gideon’s International for the evangelistic work they do in supplying Bibles and physical ministry; a Gideon display will be available at the funeral to assist with donations.
