Lucy Mae Collins Harris

Mrs. Lucy Mae Collins Harris, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday morning, August 7, 2024, at her home. Mrs. Harris was born December 8, 1933, in Surry County, to the late Aldie Roosevelt and Annie Elizabeth Tickle Collins. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Frank Dale Harris; and a son, Craig Dale Harris. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by her twin brother, Lewis Ray Collins. Raised on a farm to Godly parents, Lucy Mae Collins Harris knew the value of a dollar and the blessings of a strong work ethic. She understood the priceless gift of family and the beauty found in devoting oneself to their church. And so, her life was built from the substance of all things good and holy. Lucy graduated from White Plains High School in 1953. She met Frank and married him in 1962, and she gave birth to their son, Craig, in 1964. Lucy claimed their firstborn was perfect and so there was no need for more. With Craig at the center of their universe, their family was complete. They placed all their love and energy on their young son, never missing a single ballgame or school activity and letting him learn by their side, or on a tractor, whatever the case may be. Life was good and simple, and Lucy liked it that way. She found great joy in daily life and freely gave her time to the things and the people she held dear. She worked full time, raised her family, was active in her church, and kept close family ties. Lucy worked at Caudle’s Food for close to 20 years and then in banking for over 30 years. Her work ethic was second only to her heart, which was both compassionate and loyal. Retiring early to care for her mother and then her twin brother, Lewis, Lucy understood the value of loved ones and family and set them as a priority. Devoted to her church and God, she spent her time helping with homecomings and other activities at Union Hill Friends Church, where she earned the title of the oldest living member and now the recognition of having been the longest member of the church. Lucy loved her family by relation and her church family. Later in years, she found a third family at the local Chick-fil-A, where she, her husband, and their son would go to eat breakfast six days a week, every week for the past twelve years. They developed friendship and strong bonds with the beautiful people there and that deemed them family. Lucy Mae Collins Harris is remembered as a woman who lived well and fully and will be greatly missed by all three of her families. Until we meet again… A service of worship and celebration of Lucy’s life will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Union Hill Friends Church, with the Rev. Ernest L. Brown and the Rev. Fonda Younger officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, under the direction of the Rev. Kenneth Jessup. No formal visitation will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Union Hill Friends Church, 2315 Red Brush Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
