Mabel Utt

Mrs. Mabel McMillian Utt, 86, of Cana, VA, passed away Thursday, May 30, 2019 at Forsyth Medical Center.  She was born in Patrick County January 14, 1933 to the late Samuel Cassell and Laura Elizabeth Dawson McMillian.  She was a graduate of Hillsville High School in 1952.  After retiring from the textile mill, Mrs. Utt worked along beside her husband, Lonnie in their family apple and peach orchards, serving customers from several states as well as local patrons.  She enjoyed working in her garden, canning various vegetables, and was well-known for her chow chow.  She dried bushels of apples each year by methods taught to her by her grandmother.  Mrs. Utt is survived by her husband Lonnie Utt, Sr.; sons and daughter-in-law, Lonnie Utt, Jr. and Nancy, and Don Utt; grandchildren, Matthew Allen Utt and Joshua Aaron Utt and wife, Deanna; great grandchildren, Carter, Sophia, Catherine and Adelaide Utt; a sister, Opal Thomas; brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen McMillian, Clinton and Gaye McMillian, Ross McMillian, and Clayton and Darlene McMillian and Mary Jane McMillian; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Utt was preceded in death by a sister, Eulala McMillian Dawson; brothers, Earl and Dwight McMillian.  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Flat Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy McCraw officiating.  There will be no formal visitation at the funeral home.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
