Mrs. Madge Simmons York, 90, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday night, May 16, 2017, at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. York was born April 17, 1927, in Surry County, one of nine children born to the late James Dewey and Hulda Nichols Simmons. Madge was an active member of White Plains Ruritan Club and was the first woman member. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and White Plains Friends Meeting. Madge was an avid gardener, where she enjoyed her time outdoors. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Johnny Bowman of Mount Airy; two sons and their spouses, Dale and Brenda York of Mount Airy and Brad York and Enrique Patino of Miami, FL; her grandchildren, John and Meghan Shelton of Charlotte, Jamey and Jaime Shelton of Wilmington, Missy and Phil Whitaker and Dustin and Holly York, all of Mount Airy, and Julie and Kevin Pratt of Dobson; her great-grandchildren, Connor Shelton, Emma Shelton, and Finley Shelton, all of Charlotte, Noah Shelton and Vann Shelton, both of Wilmington, Jed Whitaker, Will Whitaker, Nate Whitaker, Brody York, and Mallie York, all of Mount Airy, and Carley Pratt and Ally Pratt, both of Dobson; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Imogene and Arnold Radford of Mount Airy, Hilda Harbour of Dobson, and Frances and Lewis Peacock and Barbara Cruise, all of Kernersville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Eugene and Betty Simmons and Dr. Dean and Carole Simmons, all of Mount Airy; three sisters-in-law, Virginia W. Simmons, Marion J. York, and Carolyn M. York, all of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. York was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Jack York; a sister, Mary Sue Jarvis; and a brother, Wayne Simmons. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 19, 2017, at 11:00 AM at White Plains Friends Meeting, with the Rev. Jake Penley and the Rev. Stewart R. Mauck officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at White Plains Friends Meeting. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to White Plains Ruritan Club, c/o Garnett Beasley, 1626 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or White Plains Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 849 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The York family would like to express their appreciation to her private caregivers, the staff of Home Instead Senior Care, and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice for the care given to their mother. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
