Mrs. Magalene Louise "Maggie" Hager Varney, 87, of 132 Juniper Lane, Mount Airy, NC, passed away Monday morning, February 14, 2011, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Varney was born November 23, 1923, in Mingo County, WV, daughter of the late William McKinley and Orthea Runyon Hager. Maggie worked at Cantee's Department Store in Williamson, WV, in her early adult years. She later worked at Sears-Roebuck Company in Williamson, WV, where she retired as a clerk after many years of service. Maggie and her husband, Earl L. Varney, Sr., moved to Mount Airy, NC, after their retirement in 1981, and she worked part-time at Wal-Mart. Mrs. Varney was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Goody, KY. She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Earl L. Varney, Sr. of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Earl L. Varney, Jr. and Jan Varney of Mount Airy, NC; two grandsons and their spouses, Anthony Lee "Tony" and Melissa Varney of Mount Airy, NC, and Gregory Earl and Jessica Varney of Asheville, NC; and three great-grandchildren, Jasmine Varney, Bryson Varney, and Mason Varney, all of Mount Airy, NC. The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 17, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Salem Baptist Church in Goody, KY. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memory Gardens in Huddy, KY. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family is being served by Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy, NC, and R.E. Rogers Funeral Home in Belfrey, KY.
