Mrs. Margaret Emily Jenkins Madren age 76, wife of Paul L. Madren, Jr of Mt. Airy passed away Monday September 17, 2007 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Madren was born January 2, 1931 in Surry County to the late Oscar and Dorris Burcham Jenkins. Mrs. Madren graduated from Mt. Airy High School in 1948. She graduated from the North Carolina Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 where she was an RN and served as head nurse on 3rd West until 1955. Paul and Margaret were married in 1955 and celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in February of this year. She moved with her husband to Raleigh while he attended NC State. She worked at Rex Hospital for a short time. Through the years Mrs. Madren and her family moved to Maryland, Massachusetts, Kentucky and back to Cary, NC. In the early 70's she began attending NC State and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biological Sciences in 1981. She attended graduate school and was a member of the faculty of NC State until she retired with her husband in 1990. In September of 2002 Margaret and Paul Madren moved from Cary to Mt. Airy where she became an active member of First Baptist Church and a docent at the Mt. Airy Museum of Regional History. Mrs. Madren is survived by her husband, Paul L. Madren, Jr of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Becky Gilfillan and husband Marc of Cary, NC, Beth Kasai and Kevin of Kernersville, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Madren, III and wife Kelly of Duluth, GA; five grandchildren, Sarah and Robert Gilfillan, Andrew Madren, Brent and Christian Kasai and a brother, Herbert Jenkins of Jarrettsville, MD. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, September 20, 2007 at First Baptist Church in Mt. Airy by Dr. Roger Gilbert with burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM in the Fireside Room at the church. Flowers will be appreciated or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Library Fund, 714 N. Main St, Mt Airy, NC 27030. Moody Funeral Home is assisting the Madren family.
