Margaret Mae Slate

Mrs. Margaret Mae Sechrist Slate, 96, of Mount Airy, left this world peacefully for her heavenly home on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.  Mrs. Slate was born September 5, 1921, in Surry County, one of six children born to the late Alvis and Maggie Greenwood Sechrist.  Margaret grew up in Mount Airy and attended Mount Bethel School.  Margaret, or Grannie, as she was lovingly called by most who knew her, was a member of Flippin Memorial Baptist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 50-plus years, choir member, and the oldest member of the church.  She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jewel and Horace Bondurant of Mount Airy; a daughter-in-law, Connie Boyles Slate of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Chip Bondurant of Mount Airy, Elizabeth and Wil Spires of Winston-Salem, and Julie and Bradley Radford of Ooltewah, TN; four great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Barbara Sechrist of Kernersville; and several nieces and nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slate was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ralph Lewis Slate; a son, James Leon Slate; a sister, Thelma Sechrist; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Sanford and Pauline Sechrist, Haywood and Emma Gray Sechrist, and Elmer Sechrist.  A service of worship and celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Friday, May 4, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Flippin Memorial Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tim Burton officiating.  Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.  The family wishes to express their gratitude for the genuine love and compassion shown by the staff at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Flippin Memorial Baptist Church, c/o Fannie E. Burkhart, 2337 McBride Road, Mount Airy, NC  27030; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
