Mrs. Margaret Eileen Welch Tolbert, 87, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Northern Regional Hospital. Mrs. Tolbert was born January 20, 1936, in Surry County, to the late George H. and Jessie Belton Welch. Margaret worked at Mount Airy Mantel and Table Company for 13 years and retired from North Carolina Granite Corporation after 27 years of service. She was a member of Bannertown Baptist Church, where she had served on various committees, sang in the choir, and was a member of the WMU for many years. She was an avid Rook player and sports fan. She is survived by a sister, Pat Kinney; a special family friend and adopted sister, Marilyn Thronton; a brother-in-law, Lynn Cook; two sisters-in-law, Gail B. Welch and Jerrie Welch Gordon; a special niece and nephew, Denise Jordan and David Welch and his wife, Beth, who were her primary caregivers; several other nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and a great-great-great-nephew. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin C. “Al” Tolbert; a daughter, Cynthia Margaret “Cindy” Tolbert; a son, Quinn Alvin Tolbert; six sisters, Jessica Welch Allred, Dot Welch Clifton, LaRue Welch Stanley, Nancy Welch, Jane Welch Cook, and Peggy Welch (infant); and four brothers, Junior Welch, Charles Randall Welch, Frank Welch, and Joe B. Welch. A service of worship and celebration of Margaret’s life will be held Friday, October 6, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Bannertown Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Mickey Cogdill, and burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bannertown Baptist Church Building Fund, 1834 Westfield Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Northern Regional Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
