Marie Gilley Shelton

Mrs. Marie Gilley Shelton, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 26, 2016, surrounded by her family, after several years of declining health. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Shelton was born July 16, 1921, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Walter Erastus and Pearl Lee Long Gilley. Marie worked her entire career in Mount Airy textile mills. She enjoyed quilting and was a talented seamstress. Marie is survived by two daughters, Brenda Gaye Goins and her husband, Jehu, of Mount Airy and Mary Ann Watkins and her husband, John, of Greensboro; a grandson, Jonathan Todd Watkins of Greensboro; a great-grandson, Jacob Daniel McBride of Mount Airy; a sister, Jackie Bennett and her husband, Bill, of Mount Airy; and a sister-in-law, Jewell Lowe of High Point. She is also survived by ten nieces and four nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by a beloved grandson, Billy Ray McBride; a granddaughter, Brenda Faye McBride; three sisters, Margie Whitaker, Kathleen Davis, and Betty Thomas; three brothers, Herbert Gilley, Monroe Gilley, and Junior Gilley; a niece; and five nephews. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Richard Loman officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 until 10:30 AM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Central Continuing Care for the loving attention provided to Marie during her years as a resident. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Department at Central Continuing Care, 1287 Newsome Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
