Marilyn Sue Blanks, née Bondurant, of Hillsville, Virginia, died unexpectedly on April 15, 2021 at the age of 68 from a pulmonary embolism.
Marilyn knew almost everyone in Hillsville after living and working there most of her life. It seemed she taught or was the principal of everyone in town (or at least their kin). Perpetually smiling and happy, she brightened every room and heart with her personality and spirit, and left every interaction better by her presence. Although her love pampered all she knew, she especially indulged (or spoiled) her niece, nephew, and grandchildren, and left them with no doubt that they were loved immensely. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Marilyn was born on January 10, 1953, in Surry County North Carolina to John and Louise Bondurant. She grew up Carroll County, Virginia. She was an avid reader as a child.
Marilyn graduated from Carroll County High School in 1971. Continuing her education, she received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Radford (1975 and 1982 respectively). She started working at Hillsville Elementary School in 1975, first as a teacher and later as a guidance counselor, vice principal, and ended her career as principal of Woodlawn.
Marilyn was committed faithfully to the Mount Bethel Moravian Church, where she was an active member for 68 years. She also enjoyed being a member of the bridge club and Blue Ridge Country Club. She enjoyed golfing and ECU football games with her late husband Joe. She was very committed to her ladies golf group at the Country Club.
Marilyn is survived by her brother, Edwin (Ed), and sister-in-law, Cassie, niece, Noelle, and nephew, Zachary his wife Ann, and their daughters, Victoria and Elizabeth, stepsons, Scott, Daniel (Allison), and Jim (Michelle), and five grandchildren, Thomas, Kate, Jack, Lauren, and Mitchell. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Joe, who passed away in October 2020, her mother and father, nephew Jonathan, and numerous
