Mr. Marlin Winfred Hicks, 81, of 6269 West Pine Street, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday morning, December 12, 2009, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Hicks was born November 13, 1928, in Surry County, the son of the late Luther Herbert and Mallie Creed Hicks. Marlin served our country in the United States Army from 1950 to 1952. He retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. after 26 years of service and was a lifetime farmer. Mr. Hicks was a member of Ivy Green Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Smith Hicks of the home; a daughter, Leslie Hicks of Durham; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Debbie Hicks of Lowgap; three grandchildren, Derek Hicks, Dana Hicks, and Andrew Hicks, all of Lowgap; two sisters, Lillian Isaacs and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by four sisters, Alma McCune, Percy Creed, Maude Holder, and Ella Mayes; and three brothers, Jasper Hicks, Melvin Hicks, and Edgar Hicks. The funeral service will be held Monday, December 14, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Ivy Green Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lester Bryant officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the funeral service.
