Martha Christine Webb Beamer was born November 9, 1924 and passed away January 25, 2022 (age 97). Christine was a graduate of Mount Airy High School and graduated at the top of her class in science and mathematics from Meredith College in 1945. She taught mathematics in the Surry County and Mount Airy City Schools, retiring from Mount Airy Junior High School. Christine was preceded in death by her husband W. Maynard Beamer, long time Mayor of Mount Airy; by her parents Anderson Greene Webb and Lena Cruise Webb; by her brothers Edgar G. Webb, D. Locke Webb, Lewis B. Webb, J. Alton Webb, Robert Webb, Howard H. Webb; and sisters Alma W. Banner, Velma W. Gray, and Mary Frances W. Rowe. Christine is survived by her children William M. (Bill) Beamer, Jr. of Mount Airy; Judy Beamer Smith and husband Tom of Pulaski, TN; Betsy Beamer Reeves and husband Paul of Burlington, N.C. She is also survived by six grandchildren (Nic Reeves, Christine Beamer Seropian, Alec Reeves, Stephen Smith, Meredith Smith Muller, and Ike Reeves), two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom she adored. Christine was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Mount Airy where she was a long-time member of the choir, taught Sunday School, and helped write the church history in addition to participating in numerous other church activities. She was a member of the Senior Arts and Crafts Guild, Junior Arts and Crafts Guild, and the Junior Woman’s Club. She was interested in the arts, having performed in community theatre with Andy Griffith and in several productions of the Surry Arts Council. Christine served as a docent at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History for many years. She loved a good cup of coffee, music, art, creating things, cake decorating, reading the “funnies” and a good joke. Her family will miss her love, compassion, tender loving care and her pound cake.
Christine was very concerned for her fellow man and wished for us all to protect ourselves from the COVID pandemic and stay healthy; for this reason, no service will be held at this time. A memorial service will be scheduled at an appropriate time in the future. The family requests that memorial gifts go to The First Baptist Church of Mount Airy who have more than demonstrated their love and generosity as her health has failed.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by Lynn Treece and Terry Sterling. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Nelson Gardner, Choice Physical Therapy, Gates Pharmacy, the Emergency Staff at Northern Hospital, and the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice of Dobson.
