Mrs. Martha Jean “Jeanne” Jones Cassell, age 79, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Cassell was born in Surry County on June 5, 1939, to Floyd and Ethel Cundiff Jones. She was deeply loved not only by her family, but also by everyone who met her. She was well known in the community as being a wonderful cook and cupcake maker. She served as President of the White Plains Women’s Club. Mrs. Cassell was a life time member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and lead missions work through GA’s and WMU. She was a volunteer at Northern Hospital of Surry County for 38 years where she was also former president of the NHSC Pink Ladies. Not only did she help her daughter study for her career in nursing, she received her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate while doing so. Among those who will always cherish her memory is her devoted husband and love of her life of 58 years, Bill Cassell; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Jack Wyrick, Jr.; sons and daughters-in-law, Gray and Beverly “BJ” Cassell; and Lewis and Kayla Cassell; grandchildren, Krista Marion and husband Josh, Kayla Short and husband Shannon, Kevin Wyrick and wife Aleicia, Josh Cassell, and Salem Cassell; great grandchildren, Lynzie Thomas, Will Thomas, Liam Wyrick, Silas Wyrick, and Ellie Kate Short; a sister, Rachel J. Allred; a brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Stella Jones; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 at Moody Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church by Rev. Rusty Reed, Rev. Scott Schuyler, and Dr. Joel Stephens. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. “Granny” will also lie in state at the church thirty minutes prior to the service.
