Martha Frances Chandler Smith

Mrs. Martha Frances Chandler Smith, 85, of 256 Hylton Street, Mount Airy, passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Smith was born August 26, 1923, in Surry County, to the late Isaac Martin and Martha McMillian Chandler. She retired from Workman's Federal Savings and Loan (Southern National Bank) after 52 years of service. Frances was a member of Grace Moravian Church, where she served as secretary and treasurer for 35 years, and volunteered as a pink lady at Northern Hospital of Surry County for many years. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Sam and Kimberly Smith of Charleston, SC, and Richard and Kristin Smith of King; and four granddaughters, Madalyn Allisse Smith of Charleston, SC, Anna Grace Smith, Victoria Chandler Smith, and Scarlett Elizabeth Smith, all of King. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Smith; and two sisters, Mary Margaret Boyles and Mamie Maude Chandler Smith. The funeral service will be held Saturday, October 18, 2008, at 11:00 AM at Grace Moravian Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Tony Hayworth and the Rev. Dennis Barnett, and burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night 6:00 to 9:00 at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy.
