Marvin Leonard Laster

Mr. Marvin Leonard Laster, age 92, of Elkin, NC passed away on Wednesday September 5, 2018 at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born in Surry County on August 29, 1926 to the late John Houston Laster and the late Mary Ann Butcher Laster. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 47 years, Effie Hamlin Laster; four sisters, Nervia Melton, Emma Holyfield, Vergie Melton Cockerham, Onia Lawrence; by two brothers, Avery Laster and  Harvey Laster.

Marvin graduated from Mountain Park High School in 1943 where he was active in farm projects and pitched for the baseball team. After graduation he pitched for the Mountain Park team in the Yadkin Valley League. He was a member of Gum Orchard Baptist Church, worked at Chatham Manufacturing for a few years, and truly enjoyed being a lifelong farmer. In his early life he enjoyed playing rook and horseshoes, and in later years riding over the farm in his golf cart.

Surviving is his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jack Luffman of Elkin; sister-in-law Vernice Wall,  several loving nieces and nephews, Linda and Barry Martin, Cathy and Jay Fergus, Ronnie Lawrence, Jimmy Lawrence, Dorothy and Bill Forsythe, Scarlett Wall, Greg and Sandra Hamlin, Ricky and Jennifer Hamlin, Misty and Buddy Jones, Linda and Monty Leinbach, Ray and Frances Holyfield, Leon and Barbara Holyfield, Wanda Jean and Ralph Hanes, niece and nephew spouses Delores Lawrence, Judy Melton, and Charles Durham, and a special grand dog Kate.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday September 8, 2018 in the chapel of Moody-Davis Funeral Home, with burial to follow in the Zephyr Cemetery. Rev. James Hobernicht and Rev. Joe Lambert will officiate the services. The family will receive friends at Moody-Davis Funeral Home on Saturday from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM.

The family wishes to thank family members and friends, and the staff of Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for all their loving care and support of Marvin during his illness.  Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Gum Orchard Baptist Church or to Zephyr Ruritan Club (in care of Barry Martin, 171 Columbus Lane, Elkin, NC).
