Mrs. Mary Jo Smith Cain, 77, of 2355 Willis Gap Road, Ararat, VA, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 6, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Cain was born September 29, 1934, in Patrick County, VA, one of eight children born to the late Lazarus and Mamie Chandler Smith. Mary Jo retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. after 35 years of service and was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Cain Nester of Cana, VA; a son and his fiancée, Bernie Wade Cain and Amy Scott of Ararat, VA; five grandchildren and their spouses, Misty and Greg Horton, Bobby and Ashley Cain, Jennifer and Kevin Rodgers, Devin Scott, and Christopher Cain; six great-grandchildren, Chase, Tanner, Noah, Zachary, Kyley, and Kaylen; two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Bettie and Bernie Epperson of Mount Airy, and Judy and Jim Jackson and Larry Sawyers, all of Ararat, VA; two brothers, Lazarus Smith, Jr. and William Edward "Crab" Smith, both of Ararat, VA; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Delman Hawks. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cain was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie Cain; a son, Bobby Cain; a son-in-law, Junior Ray Nester; a great-grandson, Deavin Shawn Jessup; and three sisters, Clara Jeanette Smith, Helen Smith Sawyers, and Virginia Smith Utt. The funeral service will be held Sunday, October 9, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Rayton Puckett and the Rev. Jimmy Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in the Doe Run Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home, 945 Zephyr Road, Dobson, NC 27017.
