Mary Etta Goins Hawks

Mrs. Mary Etta "Granny" Goins Hawks, 98, of Mount Airy, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Hawks was born January 14, 1911, in Patrick County, VA, the daughter of the late Sam and Sis Pack Goins. She retired from National Furniture Company after 35 years of service and was member of Pleasant View Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Tish and Jack Arrington of Mount Airy; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susan Hawks of Winston-Salem; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Teresa Hurd of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hawks was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hawks; two daughters, Bertha Hardy and Jennie Morris; three sons, Fred Hawks, Jr. (Kildee), Homer Hawks, and Bill Hawks; two sisters, Thelma Dixon and Fannie Noel; two brothers, Hobert Goins and Tom Goins; and a special aunt, Belle Griffith. The funeral service will be held Friday, May 29, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Dennis Arrington and Mr. Dan Swartz, PA, officiating. Burial will follow in the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the funeral home.
