Mrs. Mary Ella Flinchum Hodges, 96, of Lowgap, passed away Monday night, August 29, 2011, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 25, 1915, in Carroll County, VA, the daughter of the late Oliver Pinkney and Rozena Brendle Flinchum. She was married to Elmer W. Hodges for 62 year prior to his death in 1994. Mrs. Hodges retired from Washington Mills/Tultex in 1976 after 25 years of service and was a longtime and faithful member of Beulah United Methodist Church. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Glenda and Charles Taylor of Lowgap, Faye Comer of Dobson, and Mary and Gary Snow of Mount Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Billy R. and Shelby Hodges of Lowgap and Bobby J. Hodges and his friend, Faye Simmons, of East Bend; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two-step-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a special "adopted" family, Buddy, Catherine, and Tommy Creed and Lisa Creed Anderson and family. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Delmore Comer; a grandson, Randy Hodges; five sisters, Lula Moore, Annie Flippin, Sadie Smith, Ruth Fowler, and Gracie Flinchum; and two brothers, Clyde Flinchum and Clarence Flinchum. The funeral service will be held Thursday, September 1, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Dennis W. "Bud" Cameron and Billy R. Hodges officiating. Burial will follow in the Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030; or the Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o David Whitfield, 266 Raven Knob Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation for the wonderful care provided by Dr. David Dixon and Crystal, Barbara, Jerry, and Jana with Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
