Mary Nell King

Mrs. Mary Nell “Dee” Newman King, age 89, passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at her home in Charlotte, due to multiple myeloma.  Mrs. King was born on January 7, 1929, in Mt. Airy, the daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Esther Mariam Wright Newman.  Mary Nell graduated from White Plains School, Class of 1948 and Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1951.  After completing nursing school, she married her high school sweetheart, James Franklin King and they settled in San Diego, CA.  Mary Nell and Jim always called Mt. Airy “home” although they lived many places during Jim’s 20 years in the Navy.  Mary Nell retired from Mecklenburg County Mental Health Hospital at the age of 67.  However, she continued her nursing career there until she was 73.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by 2 sisters, Della Atkinson and Bertie Branch Barker and 4 brothers, Roger, Paul, Clifford and Troy Newman.  Survivors include her 3 children and 2 daughters-in-law, Edgar Wilburn King and his wife, Debbie of Wilmington, Pamela Cheryl King of Ft. Mill, SC, and Jeffrey James King Sr. and his wife, Marge of Kannapolis, 3 grandchildren, Jeffrey James King, Jr, Sonny Aaron King and Eden Noel King; one great granddaughter, Ella Beth King; one sister, Elsie Cleo Simpson and one brother, Garnett Newman and his wife, Norma of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews.  The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home, Sunday, November 25th beginning at 12:30.  Following the visitation a graveside service will be held at Skyline Memory Gardens at 2:00 PM.  If desired, in remembrance of Mary Nell, memorials may be made to the US Navy Memorial at www.navymemorial.org/general-donation or to Easter Seals at www.easterseals.com  or mail to Easter Seals, 141 W Jackson Blvd., Suite 1400A, Chicago IL 60604.
