Mrs. Mary Madison Smith Cox, 100, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday night January 23, 2023.  She was born in Surry County on October 3, 1922, to the late Zachary Madison Smith and Katie Lee Spaugh Smith.  She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.  She loved sailing, reading, needlework, and watching the wildlife in her yard.  Mary Madison was a member of the Mount Airy and the NW Regional Library Boards.  She is survived by daughter, Madison “Tippy” Mason and husband, George, daughter, Neill Cox; and son, Vance Cox, Jr. and wife Dottie; granddaughters, Kathy Gallman and husband Charles; Suzanne Whatley and husband Michael; a grandson Charles J. Cox; great grandchildren, Will Gallman, Mac Gallman, Michael Whatley, George Whatley, and Mary Kate Whatley.  In addition to her parents, Mary Madison was preceded in death by her husband, Vance E. Cox; sisters, Sarah Hayes and Barbara Huss; and brothers, Strother Smith and Richard Smith.  A private celebration of life service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Mount Airy Public Library, at www.nwlibrary.org or to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 1286, Mount Airy, NC 27030.  The family would like to thank the staff of Home Instead and Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.  A special thanks to her caregivers, Leslie, Teresa, Ginger, Doris, Lynn, Rebecca, Shawn, Hazel, and Kathleen for all of the love and support for the past 6½ years.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Cox family.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
