Mary Lou Midkiff

Miss Mary Lou Midkiff, 80, of Mount Airy, passed away Friday, October 8, 2010, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Miss Midkiff was born January 2, 1930, in Surry County, to the late Benton and Maggie Deatherage Midkiff. She was a very loving and giving sister, aunt, and friend. She was a graduate of Appalachian State University. She taught school in Surry County Schools for 31 years, with 29 years at Flat Rock School and teaching there during the Flat Rock School Fire. Miss Midkiff was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. Surviving are three sisters, Ruth DeHart, Ruby King, and Bennie Simmons, all of Mount Airy; a niece, Harriet Atkins; five nephews, Sammy DeHart, Danny DeHart, David DeHart, Craig Hiatt, and Ben Hiatt; eight great nieces, Nikki Hull, Sarah DeHart, Amy DeHart, Brooke DeHart, Karen DeHart, Annie DeHart, Savannah Atkins, and Shelley Atkins; four great nephews, James DeHart, Derrick DeHart, Thomas DeHart, and Harley Atkins; four great-great nieces, Kaylynn Hull, Hayden Hull, Cloie Atkins, and Sparrow Krantz; a great-great-nephew, Samuel Krantz; and special friends, Gladys McHone, Clara Chavier, Clara Hensley, Lisa Miller, Travis Dull, and Hungry Farmer friends, including Darlene, Sharon, Shirley, and Lupie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Faye Midkiff; a great nephew, Jed Atkins; and a great niece, Blair DeHart. A graveside service will be held Monday, October 11, 2010, at 11:00 AM at Skyline Memory Gardens, with the Rev. Stewart Mauck officiating. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time for Miss Midkiff to be taken to the cemetery for the graveside service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Youth Mission Trip Fund at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. Box 27, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
