Mary Helen Patton Newman

Mrs. Mary Helen Patton Newman, 88, of 1719 Inglebrook Trail, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, April 14, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Newman was born July 25, 1922, in Grayson County, VA, to the late Emmett Luther and Harriet Cynthia Leonard Patton. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Pauline "Polly" and Steve Gross of Mount Airy; two grandsons and their spouses, Bryan and Kim Gurley of Mount Airy and Jason and Amy Gurley of Brevard; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Gurley, Julia Gurley, Nicholas Gurley, and Jacob Gurley; two step-grandchildren, Amy Gross Gurley of Brevard and Dr. Jill Gross of Seattle, WA; step-great-grandchildren, Casey Honz and Jacob Honz; two sisters-in-law, Lucille Newman of Hillsville, VA, and Ollie Newman of Austinville, VA; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Newman was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Edwin Newman; two sisters, Ruth Elizabeth Testerman and Etta Loutisha Roberts; and two brothers, Charles Daniel Patton and Willie Charles Patton. The funeral service will be held Sunday, April 17, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Ray Hanna and the Rev. Charles Smythers officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care and the staff of the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for all the special love and care given to Mrs. Newman during illness. A special thank you to her caregivers, including Gail McCrary, Crystal Crouse, Eric Youngquist, Joey McKeithan, and Alice Hawks.
