Mary Ann Martin Shumate

Mrs. Mary Ann Martin Shumate, 97, of Mount Airy, passed away Saturday night, November 4, 2023, at Willow Valley Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Winston-Salem.  Mrs. Shumate was born October 28, 1926, in Wilkes County, one of fourteen children born to the late Sherman Stephen and Eva Laura Isenhour Martin.  Mary Ann was reared in the Millers Creek community of Wilkes County and graduated from Millers Creek High School.  After moving to Mount Airy in 1977, Mary Ann worked as a clerk at Randleman Drug for five years.  She later worked as the activities coordinator at Northern Hospital of Surry County (now Northern Regional Hospital) for 12 years.  She was a Christian and a faithful member of Christ Community Church until her health declined.  She is survived by a grandson, Reggie Lee “Little Reggie” Shumate of Bowling Green, KY; a great-grandson, Kaden Shumate of Bowling Green, KY; several nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shumate was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Charles Ray Shumate; two sons, James Reginald Shumate and Jeffrey Scott Shumate; five sisters, Ollie Mae Miller, Grace Robbins, Louise Elizabeth Hawkins, Edith Laura Hefner, and Almedia Pearl Lail; and eight brothers, Sherman William Martin, Ernest Clyde Martin, James Edward Martin, McKinley Ray Martin, Flake Martin, Gary Clayton Martin, Arville Martin, and Floyd Martin.  A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Dover Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. David J. Brady officiating.  No formal visitation will be held.  Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to Christ Community Church, P.O. Box 1263, Mount Airy, NC  27030.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
