Mrs. Mary Ella Hicks Spencer, 59, of 107 Dry Rock Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Saturday morning, May 2, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Spencer was born March 9, 1950, in Franklin County, VA, to the late Charlie Wilton and Ella Jean Dixon Hicks. She was a homemaker and a member and Sunday school teacher of Country Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Amos Edgar Odell Spencer of the home; four sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Edgar Spencer of Elizabeth City, Michael Amos and Peggy Spencer of Lexington, Joseph Odell Spencer of Smithfield, and Steven Robert Spencer of the home; seven grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Loretta Edwards of Mount Airy, Linda and Tim Snavley of Lambsburg, VA, and Ruth Ann and Doug Anderson of Winston-Salem; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Charles Hicks and Richard Hicks, both of Mount Airy, Kelly and Brenda Hicks of East Bend, and James and Sue Hicks of Cana, VA; and two special friends, Ester Davis and Diane Davis, both of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Spencer was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Spencer; and a brother, Albert Hicks. The funeral service will be held Monday, May 4, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Country Baptist Church, with the Rev. Wayne Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Country Baptist Church, 345 Neal Road, Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Country Baptist Church, c/o Lena Beck, 249 Welcome Baptist Church Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030, to establish a fund to assist the family with the funeral expenses.
