Mary Laura Chilton Stevens, aged 85, of Mount Airy passed away at her home on March 7th, 2023. She lived her life with a servant’s heart - a devoted and loving wife of 59 years to the late Bobby Guy Stevens. She was mother to seven children, and 15 grandchildren, and she had the joy of 19 great grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, Dalmer Chilton of Mount Airy; four daughters and sons-in-law, Rebecca Stevens of Raleigh, Laura Sechrist and husband Charles of Mt. Airy, Sarah Stevens and husband Edwin Johnson of Mt. Airy, and Lisa Weller and husband Mike of Harrisburg; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark Stevens and wife Cathy of Mt. Airy; and grandchildren Anna Jane Hedgepeth (Ben), Zack Brintle (Krystyn), Preston Stevens (Nora), Marybeth Stevens, Anna Stevens, Claire Stevens, Daniel Sechrist, Mary Haymore (Daniel), Maeve Sechrist (Brittany), Jennifer Wiley (Stephen), Maggie Fraley (Cameron), Christopher Stevens (Katie), Michael Stevens (Magdalena), Michael Weller (Alex), and Caroline Weller; and son-in-law John Brooks of Naples, Florida. Mary was preceded in death by sisters Maxine Simmons and Dorothy Bateman; daughter Barbara Stevens, son William “Billy” Stevens; and one great-grandson. Special thanks to Karen Lewis, Alledia Hess and Diane Draughn. An excellent homemaker, her house was never dirty, meals were always homemade, and laundry was always done. She seldom sat still. Never one to put up with much nonsense, she also had a way of always making you feel like you could come over any time, and she never let you leave hungry. She took pride in her Sunday lunches (known for her chicken casserole, green beans, and chocolate pies), loved the beach, and a good game of Rook. She was a committed supporter of the Salvation Army and causes related to Native Americans. She will be dearly missed. A private service will be held.
