Mary Ann Hutson Tolbert

Mrs. Mary Ann Hutson Tolbert, 73, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday night, February 21, 2017, at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Tolbert was born June 6, 1943, in Surry County, one of seven children born to the late James Murphy “J.M.” and Mecie Etta Johnson Hutson. Mary Ann was a dedicated farmer’s wife, who worked alongside her late husband, Floyd Thomas Tolbert, for many years raising tobacco. She was a faithful member of Blackwater Community Church. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Dale and Debby Tolbert of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Katrina and Monty Wolfe of Mount Airy and Alisha and Rodney Johnson of Harmony; three stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Maddie Wolfe, Carver Wolfe, and Lucas Johnson; twelve great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters, Louise Atkins, Pauline Johnson, and Lorene Perdue, all of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Inez Hutson of Mount Airy; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by a sister, Stella Robertson; and a brother, Vance Hutson. The funeral service will be held Friday, February 24, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Blackwater Community Church, with the Rev. Ted Crotts, the Rev. Frank Danley, and the Rev. Ray Hutson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Blackwater Community Church. At other times, the family welcomes friends to the home of Katrina and Monty Wolfe at 541 Johnson Road, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Center and the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care.
