Mary Etta Steele Young

Mary Etta Steele Young, 75 years of age, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2006, after a short illness. She was born in Stokes County to William Ernest and Sarah Elizabeth Moore Steele. She was a graduate of Sandy Ridge High School and Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing where she earned her nursing degree in 1952. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Airy and the Rebekah Sunday School Class. She was retired from Surry Surgical Associates where she worked as a registered nurse/surgical assistant for Dr. Richard Jackson and Dr. David Jackson for 30 years. She administered outpatient chemotherapy to many patients in Surry County under the direction of Dr. Hyman Muss of NC Baptist Hospital and was instrumental in bringing a cancer center to Northern Hospital. She was also retired from Northern Hospital of Surry County as charge nurse on second east. She served on the Board of Commissioners for Mount Airy, on the Board of Trustees of Northern Hospital of Surry County, on the Surry County Health Foundation, and the Surry County Home Health Advisory Board. In 1994, she became the first recipient of the Sue Wilson Memorial Award given by Northern Hospital for outstanding nursing performance. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Wiley Leonard "Dick" Young, and is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Y. Martin and husband, Gregg, and Lynnette Young, all of Mount Airy; two grandsons, Josh Martin and his wife, Candice, and Jeff Martin, all of Mount Airy; a great granddaughter, Hailey Martin of Mount Airy; two brothers, Vincent Steele of Stoneville and Akers Steele and wife, Cathy, of Sandy Ridge; a sister-in-law, Pauline Y. Payne of Mount Airy; three brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Haywood Young and wife, Alyene, of Mount Airy, Bernie Young and wife, Bonnie, of Pinnacle, and Revel Young and wife, Bonnie of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Goins of Mount Airy; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special children and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Gene S. Adams and her husband, Jim, and two sisters-in-law, Thelma H. Steele and Elizabeth Y. Goins. The family will receive friends Friday, September 29, 2006, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The funeral service will be conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert on Saturday, September 30, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Moody Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 714 North Main Street, Mount Airy, NC 27030, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
