Mrs. Mattie Elaine Penn Clark, 79, of Spencer, Virginia passed away September 25, 2018, at her home. She was born on January 15, 1939, to the late Ernest Preston Penn and Rosa Lee Hylton Penn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey Preston Penn, Sr., James Oscar “Wimpy” Penn, Bobby Joe Penn and Henry Lee Penn and three great-grandsons, DeAngelo Waller I, DeAngelo Waller II, and DeMargeo Waller. Grandma Elaine, as she was affectionately called by many, was a babysitter for many children over the years. She was a faithful member of Trinity Church of the Living God for 59 years, where she served as the Women’s Society of Christian Service Treasurer and Junior High Sunday School Teacher. She will be remembered as a loving and giving wife, mother, grandma, daughter, sister, aunt, babysitter, cousin and friend.
Mrs. Clark is survived by her husband, James William Clark, Jr. of the home; five daughters; Priscilla (Laron) Cox of Spencer, Patricia (Arthur) Dandridge of Fieldale, Betty (George) Hairston of Spencer, Fay (Don) Hairston of Martinsville, and Deborah (Jarvis) Glenn of Spencer; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Rosa Marie (James) Hairston of Bassett, Mary Niblett of Roanoke, Alberta “Tootsie” Penn of Bassett, Gloria Jean (Sammy) Hagwood of Critz; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Filmore (Barbara) Penn of Spencer, David (Mary) Penn of Critz, Beatrice Penn of Spencer, Bishop Burgie Penn of Stuart, and Carrie Penn of Martinsville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Clark will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Church of the Living God with Bishop Burgie Penn officiating and Elder Frank B. Tatum eulogizing. Burial will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The wake will be held one hour prior to the services at the church on Sunday afternoon.
