Mrs. Mattie White Durham, 81, widow of Mr. James Daniel Durham, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 10, 2009 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born in Surry County on October 31, 1927 to the late Gilbert L. and Minnie Davis White. Mrs. Durham was retired from Spencer's Incorporated and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters and a son-in-law, Vickie Hodges and Lisa and Mark Anderson all of Mount Airy; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Larry Durham of Winston-Salem and Dan and Tina Durham of N. Augusta, SC; four grandchildren, Greg and wife Ashley Durham of Pilot Mountain, Sarah Hodges of Mount Airy, Rebecca Durham of Mount Airy, and Jordan Anderson of Mount Airy; a great-granddaughter, Riley Madison Hawks; a step granddaughter, Audrey Simpson and husband Tim of Mt. Airy; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Ann and Roger Stanley of Elkin and Lorene and George Holyfield of Dobson; a brother and sister-in-law. G.L. and Norma White of Burlington. In addition to husband and parents, Mrs. Durham was preceded in death by four sisters, Ivy White, Eva Stanley, Ola Parks and Inez Holt; three brothers, Adam White, Elguy White and Herbert White. Her funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Sunday, July 12, 2009 at Fairview Baptist Church by Rev. Dan Merritt and Rev. Andy Atkins with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends form 6 to 8 pm on Saturday at Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Suite 999, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220. We would like to thank Dr. Kerley for his guidance and support during her extended illness. The family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Priddy Manor of King, especially Julie Farmer, for the love and compassionate care they so freely gave to Mrs. Durham during her stay there.
