PILOT MOUNTAIN – On Friday, February 2, 2018, Maude Elizabeth Allen Creed, 92, passed from this world into the arms of our loving Savior with her caring daughter, Kathy, by her side. Mrs. Creed was the widow of Curtis W. Creed. She was born April 7, 1925, in Surry County, to John A. and Carrie Dezarn Allen. She married Curtis on August 17, 1945, and they enjoyed 58 years of happiness until his passing in 2004. Maude leaves behind her loving daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Philip Sutphin of Westfield; two precious grandchildren and their spouses, Jonathan and Melissa Sutphin of Westfield and Sarah and Isaac Norman of Lincolnton; five wonderful great-grandchildren, Taylor and Reegan Sutphin and Curtis, Judah, and Jacob Norman; three sisters, Blanche Falkenberry of Winston-Salem, Lucy Still of Charlotte, and Nancy (John) Hunt of Shoals; three brothers, Frank (Mae) Allen of Charlotte, Fred Allen of Gastonia, and Lonnie (Frances) Allen of Pinnacle; and a brother-in-law, Walter Croft of Aiken, SC. She is also remembered by many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews, along with special friends, Mary Barnes and JoAnn Dezarn. Other loved ones who departed this life before her include her parents and faithful husband; a young son, Woodie; a sister, Mae Croft; and six brothers, Clarence Allen, Luke Allen, James Allen, Henry Allen, Roy Allen, and Paul Allen. She received Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was a faithful member of Pilot View United Methodist Church, where she attended and was actively involved in all of the church’s ministries, including feeding the hungry, ministering to the local Hispanic population, and ensuring that every person in the community had a chance to learn about Christ. She also served her Lord in leadership positions, such as Sunday school teacher, choir member, Senior Adults, and Bible School. As long as her health allowed, Maude served as a role model for the church’s younger members by seldom missing a service of any kind. Not only was she a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, she faithfully practiced our Lord’s commandment to “Love one another” in everything that she did. She truly lived her faith. Maude graduated from Shoals High School in 1942, where she was an excellent student and basketball player. In August 1945, her fiancé, Curtis, had been given military staging orders in Texas to participate in the invasion of Japan. Shortly after the dropping of the atomic bomb on August 6, they were married on August 17 and spent their first few months in Texas. With the end of the war, they returned to Pilot Mountain and Maude found employment at Hanes/Sara Lee Corporation in Winston-Salem, where she worked until retirement in 1987. In the mid-1960s, a group of citizens saw a need for a volunteer fire department to protect the rural area surrounding Pilot Mountain. With her husband, Curtis, as a charter member of Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department, Maude worked tirelessly beside him in the department’s Ladies Auxiliary as they raised money to purchase fire equipment for the community. During her retirement, Maude enjoyed her grandchildren, traveling, cooking, and fellowship with her family and friends. She was an avid Duke Blue Devil fan much to the chagrin of her grandson, Jonathan. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at Pilot View United Methodist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. Her earthly body will lie-in-state at the church from 12:30 until 2:00 PM as the family receives friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Pilot View United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o John Hunt, 1749 Shoals Road, Pinnacle, NC 27043. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving care given by the medical professionals of Surry Community Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, along with Mountain Valley Hospice, who cared for Maude during her illness. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the Creed family.
