Mrs. Maxie Jane Ashburn East, 102, formerly of Worth Street in Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, May 31, 2009 at Universal Health Care in King. Mrs. East was born July 30, 1906, in Surry County, daughter of the late Sam and Ida Mae Ashburn Ashburn. She retired from Renfro Corporation after 50 years of service and was a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Arvil Johnson of Mount Airy and Martha and Wade Bryant of Cana, VA; three grandchildren and their spouses, Sue and Jerry Goff of King, the Rev. Lee and Diana Johnson of Dobson, and Eddie and Denise Hiatt of Winston-Salem; several great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. East was preceded in death by her husband, Allen R. East; six sisters, Roxie Wright, Ethel Coe, Hazel McCraw, Bernice Kirkman Winn, Love Estes Farmer, and Loudene Ashburn; and three brothers, Glenn Ashburn, Blum Ashburn, and Herman Ashburn. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Robert McCrary officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Peggy and Arvil Johnson, 187 Ridgeview Road, Mount Airy.
