Maxine Snow Dockery
August 3, 1929 - May 28, 2018
Mrs. Maxine Snow Dockery passed away peacefully at her home on May 28, 2018. She was the oldest child born to the late Connie Richard & Ella McCraw Snow in the Zephyr Community. She married her love, Clinton Dockery, on December 13, 1947 at the tender age of 18 soon after graduating Dobson High School. Together they had 2 sons and one daughter.
She was always a determined hard worker. After employment in the hosiery mills for some years, she worked with her husband on their small tobacco farm, while still being full time employed. She was always quick to find some type of quick work after her 3rd child whether it was a small café or helping her brother on his farm. She and her husband had a dream and built their pride & joy, The Lantern Restaurant in Dobson. Determined to make this dream successful, they worked side by side for 38 years until The Lantern was sold in 2010. Many travel magazine’s food experts dropped by to sample the famous good old southern cooking and especially her Sweet Potato Sonker which was featured in Southern Living Magazine. Articles were featured in travel magazines as a Must Stop in the Surry County Area. If you were ever lucky enough to taste her Coconut or Chocolate Pie, you would never find a better one anywhere. So many wonderful friends were made during their days at the restaurant and you could count yourself lucky to grab a seat at the famous round table.
A political election never passed that she failed to vote. She was a diehard Democrat and wasn’t afraid to tell anybody who listened. When asked why she felt so strongly, she would answer because her Daddy was a Democrat.
She was a faithful member of Salem Fork Christian Church where she had served as a Deaconess. She had her favorite spot where she sat every Sunday and she didn’t want anyone to get her seat.
God needed another angel in Heaven when he called for her husband, Clinton, in 2010. After almost 63 years of marriage, she struggled with her different life without him. Never a day passed that she didn’t miss him. She is survived by her daughter and son in law Karen and Renfrow Hauser of Mt. Airy and her son and daughter in law Todd and Susan Dockery of Dobson. Her oldest son, Randy preceded her in death in 1966 and was forever a heartache she had to bear.
She was “TuTu” to grandchildren Scott and Sheri Hauser of Cornelius, Mark and Leah Hauser of Mt. Airy and Kennedy Dockery of Dobson. This special name also carried on with her 6 great grandchildren Ella, Nolan and Ava Hauser and Marlee, Henry and Annabelle Hauser.
Survivors also include a sister Opaline Riley of Hamptonville and two sisters in law Jackie Snow of Dobson and Estelle Snow of Elkin and many nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Two brothers preceded her in death, Farrell Snow and Leroy Snow.
The family will receive friends on Thursday May 31, 2018 from 12 – 2 with the funeral service immediately following at 2 at Salem Fork Christian Church, 2245 Zephyr Road, Dobson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Rev. Austin Caviness and Dr. Mark Hauser will conduct the services. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem Fork Christian Church, c/o Mrs. Pam Clement, Treasurer, 306 Forest Oaks Drive, Dobson, NC 27017.
