Mrs. Medie Esther Sawyers Craig, 95, of 2166 Haystack Road, Mount Airy, passed away Thursday morning, September 19, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Craig was born June 14, 1918, in Patrick County, VA, the daughter of the late Columbus "Lum" Sawyers and Ila Mae Hawks Sawyers Cassidy. Medie was a homemaker and a member of Gospel Mission Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Ann and the Rev. Arlis Thomas and Daisy Leftwich, all of Mount Airy; two sons, Leon "Shoestring" Craig of the home and Edward Sawyers of King; ten grandchildren, including a special granddaughter and caregiver, Tammy Price of Mount Airy; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister and a brother-in-law, Betty and Lester Jones of Lambsburg, VA; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Sharon Moser of Dobson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Craig was preceded in death by her husband, Abe Craig; two sons, Horace Junior Sawyers and Herbert Craig; a son-in-law, the Rev. Danny Robert Leftwich, Sr.; six sisters, Geneva Agee, Margie Hawks, Alene Andrews, Dula Wilson, Zelma Gunter, and Mary Lou Craig; and a brother, Ray Sawyers. The funeral service will be held Sunday, September 22, 2013, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Kenneth Young, the Rev. Arlis Thomas, the Rev. Jonathan Barker, and the Rev. Justin Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the New Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Ann and the Rev. Arlis Thomas, 2140 Haystack Road, Mount Airy. The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and compassion shown by the staff at Mountain Valley Hospice and Palliative Care, especially Flannery Heath, Justin Nelson, and Jennifer Clark.
