Mrs. Melva Jane Key Greene, age 88, of Dobson, passed away peacefully with family by her side, on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, at Duke University Hospital. Mrs. Greene was born in Surry County on April 3, 1930, to Molly Ada Reid Key, and Doc William Augusta Key. She was a graduate of UNC-Greensboro. Mrs. Greene began her teaching career at Mountain Park Elementary and retired from Copeland Elementary where she initially served as supervisor of food services, before returning to become a teacher. She was a devoted member of Pine Hill Friends Meeting where she served as Elder, choir member, Sunday School teacher, Women’s Circle member, and missions fundraiser. Mrs. Greene was reared as a Quaker and as a member of The Society of Friends, where she held close to the Faith and Practice of the Society of Friends as she lived her life. Mrs. Greene traveled to explore the world during mission journeys, and returned home with a message of friendship, cooperation and hope from people beyond our own communities. For years, Mrs. Greene was a lead organizer for the Pine Hill annual missions fundraiser for the Women’s Circle, putting a focus on global needs and friendships. Mrs. Greene was the author of the book, Walk With Us: Pine Hill Heritage and Hope written in the spirit of history as a tool of reflection and guidance for the future. Surviving is her husband of sixty-nine years, J. B. Greene, Jr.; a son, William J. Greene and his wife, Julie; a daughter, Vickie Greene Healey and husband Kent W. Healey and their children Kempton Healey and Cooper Healey; a sister, Selva Jean and her husband, Leonard Danley; a sister-in-law, Clara Greene Strickland and her husband, Trent Strickland and their son, Jason Strickland; a sister-in-law, Mary Key. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Greene was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Rosa Love, her sisters, Ruby Key and Dorothy Moore, and her brothers, Fred Key, Hassell Key, and Barley Key. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Pine Hill Friends with The Reverend Ray Lambe, officiating. Pallbearers are Wayne Swift, Chris Danley, Kip Danley, Ricky Bowman, Tadd Noonkester, Jason Strickland, and Cooper Healey. Burial will follow in the Pine Hill cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday at Pine Hill Meeting beginning at 9:30 AM.
