Mrs. Melverine Childress Gammons, 79, of Mount Airy, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, November 8, 2017. Mrs. Gammons was born November 20, 1937, in Surry County, to the late William Howard and Josie Pack Childress. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, who will be missed by all that knew her. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters and a son-in-law, Velvet Gammons and Jamie and Kenneth Harrold; a son, James Roscoe Gammons, II; her grandchildren, Josie Gammons, Cagney Money, James Gammons, III, Scottie Gammons, Chelsea Lindsay, and the Rev. Tim and Cindy Felts; a great-grandchild, Jaxon Lindsay; a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Pete Haynes; a sister-in-law, Nancy Childress; several nieces and nephews; and special “adopted” grandchildren, Ginger Stevenson, Chelsey McMillian, and David McCarthy. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gammons was preceded in death by her husband, James Roscoe “Gabbie” Gammons; a son, Rocky Gammons; a sister, Margaret Lee Childress Smith; and three brothers, Jim Childress, Bob Childress, and Roy Childress. The funeral service will be held Monday, November 13, 2017, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Tim Felts officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:00 until 2:00 PM at the funeral home.
