Melvin Green Hiatt, age 90, of Cana, Virginia went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 26, 2018. He was born on August 19, 1927 to the late Isaac and Armendia Hiatt. He married Vergie Utt Hiatt in 1947 and they shared 65 wonderful years together until her passing in 2012. He was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He simply was just a man of strength and goodness. He worked hard his whole life and was loved by all that knew him. He was a humble soul that loved to share a smile and visit with those he loved. He loved to fix things, and many knew him as “the lawnmower man”. He was always willing to help others and will be remembered for the way he treated his family and friends. He also proudly served our country in the US Navy. At times, he was a man of few words and it would be impossible to characterize how great he was with any words. In addition to his spouse, Melvin was preceded in death by three brothers, Carnie Hiatt, Arnold Hiatt, and Ernest Hiatt and four sisters Hazel Cline, Carrie Hiatt, Hattie Hiatt and Mabel Thomas. Surviving to share his memory are his daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Cleve Vass of Cana; a son and daughter-in-law Danny and Dorothy Hiatt of Cana; four grandchildren, Tina Smith of Mount Airy, Danielle Hiatt of Ararat, Virginia, Kelly Hiatt Thomas and spouse, John Paul Thomas of Floyd, Virginia, and Timothy (Tim) Vass and spouse, April Vass of Fancy Gap, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Jossie Vass, Audrey Thomas, and Lydia Thomas; Many special nieces, nephews, and friends, including Estelle Wrede, Bernice Walker, Doris Haynes, and Betty & Charlie Soots. All of his nieces and nephews were all very special to Mr. Hiatt and although there are too many to mention in total, they were all very loving and supportive. Also surviving are brothers and sisters-in-law Lonnie and Mabel Utt, Louise Utt, Wallace and Motiva Utt and Frances Utt. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 11a.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, with services conducted by Rev. Oscar Hill. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Cana, VA with military honors provided by VFW Honor Guard Post #2019 Mount Airy and Post #9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8pm at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice & Palliative Care, 401 Technology Lane, Suite 200, Mt. Airy, NC 27030. .
