Mr. Melvin Stoman Key, 87, of 307 Fireside Lane, Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2007, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Mr. Key was born February 16, 1920, in Surry County, one of twelve children born to the late Wilson and Addie Bunker Key. Melvin owned and operated Melvin Key's Refrigeration for many years. He served our country in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. As a result of his bravery, he was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Melvin Stoman "J.R." Key, Jr. and Vicky Key of Mount Airy; three granddaughters, Sara Key and Carolyn Key, both of King, and Lindsey Flinchum of Mount Airy; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Vergil and Helen Key of Stanleyville and Junior and Arlene Key of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Key was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Pruitt Key; several sisters; and several brothers. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at 11:00 AM at Piney Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kermit L. Gray and military rites will be conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. No formal visitation will be held at the funeral home.
