Mr. Melvin Junior Moore, 78, of 120 Glenn Court, Mount Airy, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, January 14, 2010, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Moore was born December 14, 1931, in Surry County, son of the late George Stanley and Lula Maude Flinchum Moore. Melvin served our country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a lifelong farmer and carpenter and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Ararat. Melvin was known as a simple man and was always putting others before himself. He was a master storyteller, who was known for his cooking and making others laugh. His grandchildren were the absolute joy of his life. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Edwards Moore of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Renae Moore of Mount Airy; a daughter and son-in-law, LuAnn and Benjamin Greene of Boone; five grandchildren, Jacob Benjamin Greene and Melvin Nathaniel Greene, both of Boone, and Elijah Oliver Moore, Ezekiel Wilkerson Moore, and Erin Hallie Moore, all of Mount Airy; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Owen Barber and Kathleen and Buddy Shackelford, all of Mount Airy, and Magdalene and Darryl Lentini of Lexington; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Joe and Judy Moore of Lowgap, Mike Moore of Dobson, and Peggy Dollyhigh and Linda Moore, both of Mount Airy; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moore was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Amburn; and a brother, Charles Moore. The funeral service will be held Saturday, January 16, 2010, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Wesley Boyles, Jr. and the Rev. Zane Fishel officiating. Burial will follow in the Round Peak Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
