Mr. Melvin Clifton Strickland, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, July 19, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Galax, VA. He was born November 3, 1924, in Carroll County, VA, to the late William Cabell and Hattie Meredith Strickland. Mr. Strickland served in the United States Army during World War II. He attended Charity Baptist Church and was a retired construction worker. Mr. Strickland is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Lisa Strickland and Doug and Debbie Strickland, all of Mount Airy; a son-in-law, Basil Haunn of North Myrtle Beach, SC; three grandchildren and their spouses, Mitch and Renae Haunn of Rural Hall, and Dustin and Kristi Strickland and Keisha Strickland, all of Mount Airy; a sister, Emma Snow of Fancy Gap, VA; and a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Benni Strickland of Fancy Gap, VA. In addition to his parents, Mr. Strickland was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Magdalene Tate Strickland; a daughter, Ronda Haunn; four sisters, Juanita Strickland, Edith Combs, Gladys Sisk, and Carrie Mae Sowers; and two brothers, Horace Strickland and Harry Strickland. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 2:00 PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Hank Robertson and Chaplain Thurmond Midkiff officiating. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens, with military honors by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 21, 2009, from 12:30 PM until the time of the funeral service at the funeral home.
