Meredith Ann Cox Scales

Ms. Meredith Ann (Cox) Scales, beloved daughter of Shelby Inscore-Puckett and the late Stuart M. Cox, Jr., departed this life December 21, 2021. She was born January 22, 1965. in Mount Airy, NC and grew up on a farm on Little Snake Creek near Hillsville, VA. She graduated from Carroll County High School (Class of 1983) and Mary Washington University.

She began her working career in the textile industry sewing at Cross Creek Apparel in Mount Airy, then went to Greensboro and worked as a production planner at the Lee-Wrangler Division of VF Corporation for 21 years. For the past two years she was at Kontoor Brands.
As a single mother raising two sons, she was actively involved with Boy Scouts- even accompanying the troop to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota twice. She loved canoeing, kayaking, and camping.
She also loved going to concerts and she loved, loved, loved Jamey Johnson, John Prine and Tyler Childers. She was an “over the moon” fan of the New England Patriots.
She loved her farm in Patrick County, which she called “White Dog Farm” where, at one time or another, she had goats, guineas, rabbits, chickens, ducks, 3 white dogs, cats, and a wandering cow. She loved “playing in the dirt” gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers.
She also loved people; she was kind, caring and compassionate, always doing something to help someone.
Above all else, Meredith loved life and was ever and always an active participant in her life. If she wanted to do something, she made it happen… no wishful thinking about what she might do.
As someone said on Facebook "She brought sunshine when she came into a room."
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Danny Ray Scales, her maternal grandparents Russell and Myrtle Inscore, paternal grandparents, Stuart M. and Clara Louise Cox.
Besides a host of friends, left to mourn her passing and treasure her memory are her sons, Patrick and girlfriend Taylor Vali, and Mason; her parents, Raleigh and Shelby Puckett, a brother and sister-in-law, Stuart Russell and Calista Cox; her fiancé Billy Martin; uncle and aunt David and Kay Cox, aunts Molly Summerlin, Connie Inscore, plus a bunch of special cousins.
A celebration of her life will be held at Moody Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 o’clock Sunday, December 26th and the family will welcome visitors at the Funeral Home from 12:30 – 2:00 PM.
Following the service there will be a hot dog dinner at The Hollow History Center in Ararat, VA, Over the years Meredith and her cousin Sharon Jones cooked and served so many hot dogs at family reunions, parties, and other in gatherings, they were dubbed the Ararat “Weenie Queens”—come celebrate with us a life well lived.
