Melvin Martin Miles

Melvin Martin Miles, 80, of Mt. Airy, NC, passed away Friday, February 3, 2023, at Village Care of King in King, NC.  He was born in Alleghany County, NC, on January 25, 1943, to the late Will & Mae Royall Miles.  Melvin was a retired High School & Community College Teacher.  He spent the majority of his retirement years pursuing numerous civic, service, and special interests such as being a Squad Car Driver for Mayberry Squad Car Tours, working at the Visitors Center and authoring a book on the Siamese Twins.  Melvin is also credited with starting the first Alternative School Program in Surry County and helping found the first Rescue Squad in Alleghany County.  He delivered meals to shut-ins and the homeless.  He was a very gifted piano player, choir director to the Faithful Way Singers and member of Antioch Baptist Church.  Left to cherish his memory are his children; a daughter Tamera Morton and Husband Barry Morton, of Mt. Airy, NC and a son Derrick Miles of Beulaville, NC, three grandchildren, Sage White, of Mt. Airy, NC,  Sydney Freeman and Husband Devin Freeman of Mt. Airy, NC, and Grace Miles of Beulaville, NC, four great grandchildren Xander White, Ivy Freeman, Xaiden White, and Maple Freeman and a sister, Betty Miles Walker.  Other than his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Homer John Miles, and a sister Vena Miles Newsome.  The family will receive friends Sunday night, February 5th from 5 until 7 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC. At other times the family welcomes friends to the home of Barry and Tamera Morton at 2150 South Main Street, Mount Airy.  A private graveside ceremony will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in memory of Melvin Miles to an educational institution of your choice.  Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy has been entrusted with the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.moodyfuneralservices.com.
