Mr. Michael Payne, 60, of Elkin passed away unexpectedly on Friday October 9, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Surry County on July 6, 1949 to Mrs. Gladiona Holyfield Payne and the late Leonard Payne. Mr. Payne was a self employed farmer and a member of Union Cross Baptist Church. He worked diligently on his farm and enjoyed his spare time riding with the Wilkes County HOG Chapter of which he was an avid member. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served our country during the Vietnam War. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter Stacy Payne Hester and special friend Michael Blandford of Largo Florida; his mother, Gladiona Holyfield Payne of Elkin; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred Payne Burton and husband Steve of Dobson and Audrey Payne Sink and husband Dennis of Winston-Salem; a niece, Stephanie Burton Welch and fiance Irvin Reynolds of Mount Airy; a great-niece, Kendall Welch; his fiance Lynn .Morris of Ahoskie, NC and many special friends, all who will miss him greatly. In addition to his father, Mr. Payne was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, John C. Holyfield. His funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Wednesday October 14, 2009 at Union Cross Baptist Church by Rev. Dennis Bledsoe and Dr. Victor Lyons. Burial will follow in Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church cemetery with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Mount Airy Post 2019 and Pilot Mountain Post 9436. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 pm on Tuesday October 13, 2009 at Moody-Davis Funeral Home of Dobson where his body will remain until taken to the church to lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
