Mrs. Mildred Imogene Fowler Draughn, 77, of 2560 Old Highway 601, Mount Airy, passed away Friday, June 27, 2008, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Draughn was born February 4, 1931, in Surry County, to the late Walter Thomas and Lucinda Nixon Fowler. Mildred was the valedictorian of the graduating class of 1950 from Dobson High School. She was a devoted homemaker and retired from Russell Corporation. Mrs. Draughn was a faithful member of Piney Grove Baptist Church until her health declined. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Alan Coe of Dobson; a son, Terry Draughn of Mount Airy; two granddaughters and a spouse, Myra Coe of Charleston, SC, and Jenifer and Zach White of Elkin; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Nell Bedsaul and Annie Lowe, both of Mount Airy, and Betty and Robert Hemmings of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Draughn was preceded in death by her husband, William Harry "Bill" Draughn; three sisters, Odessa Sykes, Mary Ruth Holbrook, and Gladys Stone; and four brothers, Dewitt Fowler, Walter Thomas Fowler, Jr., Grady Fowler, and Paul Fowler. The funeral service will be held Sunday, June 29, 2008, at 2:00 PM at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kermit L. Gray, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the funeral service in the fellowship hall at the church. The family may also be contacted at the home of Susan and Alan Coe, 383 Stony Knoll Road, Dobson. Flowers will be accepted, or memorial contributions can be made to Golden Living Center, 542 Allred Mill Road, Mount Airy, NC 27030. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to her caregivers, Fairy Bowman, Betty Edwards, Shannon Edwards, and Becky Bottoms, and the staff of Golden Living Center for the love, care, and compassion shown to Mildred during her illness.
