Mrs. Mildred Virginia King Smith, age 86 of Mount Airy passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson following several months of declining health. Mildred was born on May 10, 1935, in Surry County to the late Jesse Lee and Annie Lou Marsh King. In 1951 she married the love of her life Roy Sidney Smith and together they raised six children.
Mildred loved to cook and will be fondly remembered by her family for her Red Velvet and Refrigerated Coconut cakes. She was an avid reader, and loved reading devotionals, the Bible, and the “Miss Julia” books. When her health permitted, she enjoyed working with flowers and crocheting. She was devoted to her family and never missed a birthday or anniversary. Never one to miss out on staying in close touch with her children and grandchildren, Mildred embraced technology and was a regular contributor to family text threads and emails and was never far from her iPad and Facebook. She was always proud and grateful that her children have maintained a close family bond and are always available for each other. She loved all things Christmas, and although she might put her decorations away, the Christmas music continued year-round.
Mildred is survived by her devoted husband, Roy; her children Sandra and Jim Collins of Pilot Mountain, Tessa and Christopher Perrien of Durham, McCrae and Caroline Smith of Greensboro, David Smith of Asheville, and Linda Albahae of Mount Airy; her grandchildren, Justin and Meghan Collins, Joel Collins (Katie Vestal), Cameron and Megan Smith, Marin Smith, David Albahae, Alex Perrien, Owen Perrin, Tyler Prufer, Stefan Prufer, and Griffin Prufer; her great-grandchildren, Barrett, Sophia, and Liam Collins, William and London Smith; her son-in-law, Doug Bryant (Kim); her sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Tommy Craft; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Mary Annette Bryant, son-in-law, Phillip Broughton; granddaughter, Catherine Elizabeth Collins; sisters Ruby Tetirick and Mary Etta King.
At Mildred’s request, there will be no formal visitations or funeral services. The family wishes to thank the staff of Northern Regional Hospital, and the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their compassionate care.
