Milton Atkins Davis

February 21, 1928 — March 12, 2022

Mr. Milton Atkins Davis, 94 of Charlotte, NC, passed away at White Oak Manor of Waxhaw on Saturday, March 12, 2022.  Mr. Davis was born on February 21, 1928, in Pilot Mountain, Surry County to the late Wesley J. Davis and Lillie Ida Atkins Davis.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was blessed with a full, active life until declining health in later years. He graduated from Pilot Mountain High School and farmed briefly before starting his lifetime career with the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles being first assigned in Wilmington, N.C. He subsequently transferred to Charlotte in 1954, where he rose through the ranks as a Drivers License Examiner, Senior Examiner and Supervisor before his retirement in 1984. He was employed by Queen City Trailways for 12 years and had a regular weekend round-trip bus route from Charlotte to Ashville. He also drove for private charters, various high school Senior trips and school patrols to annual Washington DC events. Following retirement from the State, he worked for Butler Aviation for 10 years in Charlotte. After leaving Butler, he continued to work with various auto dealerships in the Charlotte area until the age of 90.  His passion from an early age was to fly and he obtained his private pilot license, a multi-engine ticket and subsequently became a Certified Flight Instructor. He was a former member of Enderly Park Baptist Church, served as an assistant Sunday School Teacher and Deacon, the Calvary Church, Westgate Masonic Lodge and The Scottish Rite Valley of Charlotte. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Larry W. and wife Linda of Charlotte; his grandsons, Peyton W. Davis, M.D., and Preston B. Davis, Attorney at Law and his wife Cindy; great-granddaughters, Alexis and Ashley Davis; step-great-grandson Austin Hill; his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Terry Tucker; and a brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Kay Davis, along with numerous nieces and nephews.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Lucille Bates Davis; and two sisters, Lucille Tilley and Louise Tilley. Funeral Services will be on Monday, March 21, 2022, at 12:30PM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy with Pastor Stoney Benfield officiating.  Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 – 12:30PM at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Prospect Baptist Church, 502 Prospect Church Road, Albemarle, NC 28001, or to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28210.  Moody Funeral Service in Mount Airy is serving the Davis family.
