Mr. Moir Edward Chilton, 82, of Ararat, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 1, 2025, at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem. Mr. Chilton was born June 8, 1942, in Surry County, one of nine children born to the late Jasper Solomon and Eliza Johnson Chilton. Moir was reared in the Ararat community and graduated from Copeland High School in 1960. He was a lifelong farmer and retired from Proctor-Silex Inc. after 40 years of service. During his tenure, he created lasting friendships with colleagues. He was a hardworking man who valued loyalty, perseverance, and integrity in all aspects of life. A man of faith, Moir was a devoted member of Pine Hill Church and Copeland Masonic Lodge #390 AF and AM. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda Venable Chilton; two daughters and sons-in-law, DeAnn and Jeff Poindexter and Janel and Sam Kidd; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Susan Chilton; his grandchildren, Clay and Whitney Chilton, Colby and Keylee Chilton, Sommer and Chandler Johnson, Nolan Poindexter, Audrey Poindexter, Reagan Poindexter, Jed Kidd, and Ellie Kidd; his great-grandchildren, Lennon Chilton, Presley Chilton, Indie Chilton, Phoebe Chilton, Kane Chilton, Remi Chilton, Emmy Ann Chilton, and Ada Johnson; a sister and brother-in-law, Rachel and Larry Masten; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carol Chilton, Katie and Wayne Draughn, and Jean and Joe Napier; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Chilton was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Burton Chilton; a sister, Ruth Ann Whitaker; six brothers, Bishop Chilton, Paul Chilton, Kenneth Chilton, Edsil Chilton, Herbert Chilton, and Johnson Chilton; and a sister-in-law, Lorene Key. A service of worship and celebration of Moir’s life will be held Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Pine Hill Church, with the Rev. Mark Mayes and the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Clapp officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pine Hill Church Building Fund or Cemetery Fund, 3968 NC 268, Ararat, NC 27007; or a charity of the donor’s choice. Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy is serving the family.
