Mr. Monroe Edwin Newman, 88, of Mount Airy, passed away Monday, January 31, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mr. Newman was born June 10, 1922, in Surry County, to the late Claude Turner and Martha Elizabeth Cagle Newman. He was a retired finished carpenter, a devoted husband and father, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He served our country four years in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Newman is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Dale and Roger Dean Haymore of Mount Airy; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Anita Mosley of Mount Airy, Ella Mitchell of Goose Creek, SC, Wilner and Bob Purdy of Hampton, VA, and Laurence Wilson of Mount Airy; and a brother and two sisters-in-law, Dillard Newman of Shackleford, VA, and Mrs. Porter "Janice" Newman and Mrs. C.L. "Evelyn" Newman, both of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Newman was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Inez Hodge Newman; two infant brothers; two sisters, Vernell Wilson and Bertha Coulson; and three brothers, C.L. Newman, Porter Newman, and Raymith Newman. The funeral service will be held Thursday, February 3, 2011, at 11:00 AM at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Darrell Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 9:30 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson for their compassionate care.
