Alden Lee Shelor, age 84, of Meadows of Dan, passed away Monday, January 10, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina after a courageous battle with cancer, and his wife of 60 years was by his side.
Mr. Shelor was born on February 1, 1926 in Carroll County to the late Willie and Delphia Terry Shelor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Debbie Hopkins; two brothers, Maurice and George Shelor; and two sisters, Bernice Shelor and Jane Jenks. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from August, 1944 to May, 1946. His theater of operation on the U.S.S. Langley included the Pacific, Atlantic, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He retired after a lifelong career as a brick mason. His work can be seen on many homes and buildings throughout the state of Virginia.
Mr. Shelor is survived by his wife, Thelma Wood Shelor of the home; two sons, Charles Shelor of Meadows of Dan and Danny Shelor of Galax; four daughters, Irene Hooven of Winston-Salem, Cathy Dalton of Meadows of Dan, Dorothy Argenbright of Goodview and Lora Shumate of Galax; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Thomas Shelor of Ridgeway, John Shelor of Meadows of Dan and James Shelor of Roanoke; one sister, Mary Hopkins of Collinsville; and a special sister-in-law, Virginia Shelor.
Funeral services will be conducted by Elders Tim McGrady, Edward Bowman, and Alan Terry on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at New Bell Spur Primitive Baptist Church in Meadows of Dan with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and at other times at the home.
